Wearing Glass Layered Clothing

Before I begin, note that EVERYTHING on this page depends on people accessing SL with a PBR-enabled browser. If you’re not using one, you’re going to see the XP PBR glass dress as another layer of semitransparent fabric, and if they are two different colors, they will flicker.

I developed this new way of wearing clothes in April 2025. (At least, I had never heard of it before and nobody I’ve talked with had either.) The clothes break a rule that has always existed:
You can’t wear two identical garments, with different colors or textures, at the same time. They either flicker between the colors, or one just covers the other.

It turns out that you can, provided one is a Blinn-Phong (B-P) legacy texture and the other is PBR. Rather than the two garments fighting each other, with the different surfaces flickering and flashing randomly, the PBR will just take over.

SO, some things to know as you first try on your new dresses:

  1. Make sure your LaraX HUD alphas are all OFF (so your whole body is visible).
  2. Put on the BoM bra and panties that came in the box! These will be optional of course, but for our testing we don’t want to get too distracted by what’s underneath the dresses.
  3. Wear the -X Blinn-Phong version first. It’s a shiny dress; the transparency will vary by color (I tweak those very carefully.)
    • Change the Day Cycle (Sunset, Sunrise, Midnight) and see what happens. The dress will lighten and darken the same as your skin.
    • Add some body or face lights if you have them. Again, you’ll see these light up the dress along with your skin.
  4. Take off the -X and add the -XP PBR glass dress. This is even shinier; again it will vary by color. Take your body/face lights off.
    • Again, change the Day Cycle. Note that the dress changes a LOT. Move your camera around your body; you’ll see that where the Sun hits it, it turns much more opaque (like looking at a window into a dark room from outside on a bright day). Stop at Midnight for the next test.
    • Now add those body lights again. You’ll see that they light your body, but not the dress. Shiny PBR just bounces artificial light back without absorbing any. At Midnight, the dress goes almost invisible.
  5. Now add the -X dress back and see the full effect. Play with the artificial lights and the Day Cycle, rotate your camera around and see the changes.
  6. Did you buy more than one color? Time to go crazy mixing them up and doing all these again!
  7. So far, each of my Glass dresses is based on an existing -X/-XP dress. Those are NOT transparent, but the new glass -XP dress will create a unique effect over the opaque -X one.
